CITY OF RHYME

In 2006, Shine a Light helped a group of teenagers who wanted to record a rap album to protest the violence in their favelas. The project was almost miraculous. Concerts in Brazil, Austria, London, the USA. The Freedom to Create Prize as the best young artists in the world. We have continued to support the young musicians, and in 2011, we made a second film to show how they have changed their city in five years.

  • Creation of a new group of artistic and political leaders;
  • Project won Freedom to Create Prize as the best art work for social justice in the world in 2008;
  • Fortified the idea that hip-hop should be about social justice, not commerce.
